Here is my story, Dr. Thomas. Thank you for the outstanding work you are doing. It's life changing!
I'm 43 years old and had UFE performed on June 8th, 2021. My story begins with my first pregnancy in 2010. During an ultrasound visit, the tech informed me I had fibroids. It wasn't until after I had my second child in 2013 that my fibroid symptoms began. My symptoms included heavy bleeding, cramping, lower back pain, frequent urination, fatigue, anemia, bloating and irritability. I tried to get on birth control to manage the symptoms but unfortunately my blood pressure became elevated. I did have myomectomy performed but my fibroids only increased. My gynocologist then informed me that the next step was a partial hysterectomy. I was not happy with the news. I wanted to preserve my uterus and not undergo major surgery. I began researching other options online and came upon Dr. Thomas's website. His website was very thorough and easy to understand. I began reading and YouTubing other women's experience with UFE. After some time I decided to undergo the procedure. I'm so happy I did because my symptoms improved more quickly then I expected!
My hospital experience at Methodist was excellent. The staff walked me through every step of the way. I had the opportunity to meet two women at the hospital who underwent the same procedure months ago and were very happy with results. Dr. Thomas saw me before the procedure and also walked me through procedure to recovery. He was very kind, thorough and made me feel I was in good hands. After the procedure I was sent to the recovery room and just as the nurses said would happen I began having pain and at that point I was given pain medication which was very effective. Once at home later that afternoon, I was very tired and slept most of the day. I did have pelvic pain for about 3 days but tolerable with Norco that was prescribed, Ibuprofen and rest. The puncture site was tender for about 1 week and after that no tenderness or pain. I was able to return to work one week later.
Fast forward 3 months later my fibroid symptoms are gone. I have my life back! I no longer have to worry about irregular periods, frequent urination, carrying around extra clothes or keeping a large supply of super sized pads and tampons. I am enjoying vacations again, swimming and exercising. I saw my family practitioner and CBC levels are up. In May 2021 my levels were hemoglobin 10, hematocrit 33.3, total iron 19. On July 31, 2021 my labs were redrawn and levels are now hemoglobin 12.7, hematocrit 40.5 and total iron 46. I had my second MRI done and Dr. Thomas reviewed before and after results with me and what a difference! My fibroids have shrunk and are now scar tissue. My uterine swelling has also gone down significantly.
I thank Dr. Thomas and his staff for the outstanding work they are doing and I will forever be grateful. I recommend UFE to any women struggling with fibroids!
