Since your practice is not in San Antonio, I wanted to make sure you knew we have a well-established uterine embolization practice for women with symptomatic fibroids or adenomyosis who want to keep their uterus.
When you refer a patient to us we verify that we are in network for her (so there are no surprises) and set her up for a clinic visit with one of our Interventional Radiologists. If she has not had a pelvic MRI we will set that up, as well.
During the clinic visit we listen to the patient and review her symptoms and medical history to help her decide if UFE is a good choice. We will also go over the images of her MRI with her, if she wants to see them.
By the end of that encounter she will have the information she needs to decide if she wants to proceed with UFE, or not. If she wants to proceed we take care of everything from that point on. We will get her scheduled at Methodist Hospital in the medical center and obtain authorization for the procedure. On procedure day we get her through her UFE and discharge her to home or, rarely, admit her if needed. We provide her with instructions to get through the post-procedure time and will see her back in clinic at 3 months. Earlier, if she has issues.
We do a Superior Hypogastric Nerve Block using a long acting local anesthetic so most women have only mild to moderate pelvic discomfort following the embolization. We still provide them with a prescription for Norco in case they have that kind of pain, but most women get through the recovery without needing narcotics.
